O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season at the beginning of 2005 when she was a high school student. She was able to advance into the top 100 courtesy of the judges' enthusiasm for her performance. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges but suffered major losses during the Top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals, when she fell to the lowest 3 and 2 spots in both cases. The judges were shocked, and they recommended to the audience to choose Melissa as the contestant with the most impressive ability to sing. After giving consistently stellar performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. The judge Werner was confident, following another two incredible performances, that O'Neil was going to be the winner of the Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and the youngest contestant in history in the wake of the September 7 Finals of 2005. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
